What can I do when my breast milk is soapy? Over the last few weeks my breast milk has been getting that soapy breast milk taste mothers talk about. I am able to express about 40 oz a day and I would say that at least 1/3 of the expressed milk has a very soapy flavor. I have tried scalding the milk like they have said to eliminate the flavor but that doesn't work. Is there anything I should or should not eat that may effect this. HELP, I really don't want to have to do the formula thing right now. |
| Yes, my wife also had the same problem. As you know as it seems that you have read all the breastfeeding books, what makes your breast milk taste so good and creamy to the baby is the fat. Some, women have excess lipase enzyme in in their breast milk, that after the milk is pump the enzyme immediately starts breaking down the milk fat. This is good and bad. This enzyme helps the baby immensly and usually women with this extra enzyme are fortunate since it is much easier for their baby to digest their food getting more nutrients into their system. However, the enzyme as it digest like other foods begins breaking down the fat and curdling which may make it taste soapy and or metalic like. All, I can say is if you are making that much you are fortunate. I guess my advice is any milk over 8 hours toss. I have no idea what your work schedule is but, pump then feed the baby with a portion of the milk, and then store the rest. The scalding of the milk helps sometimes but as others have said it does reduce the nutrient fat value by about 30%, so you don't wan't to do that all the time. Of course if your baby is happy and healthy and your doctor says so, you might be able to scald more often. The calories are still there. I am suprise that other mothers don't test out their milk taste. It is almost shocking that stored or heated milk is not tested by the mother, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE TESTED, ALWAYS!!!! |
My breast milk has a soapy taste, is it still safe to give? i've heard breast milk acquires a soapy taste due to an enzyme in the milk. This has happened to my milk even after a very short time and following all storage procedures. I read scalding helps stop it but can this be done after a couple of hours (milk stored in fridge) or dose it have to be done immediately? |
| Yes, its safe. I read that you can heat it up in a pan on the stove just enough to scald it and it will remove a lot of that soapy taste, but you only need to do this if your guy refuses to eat it "soapy." This taste is usually in breastmilk that has been frozen and thawed. I would scald it after the milk has thawed from being in the freezer...and then of course it will have to cool before your little one can drink it. Hope this helps! |
PID ever caused metallic/soapy taste or indigestion? Ladies who have had PID in the past, did you develop a metallic/soapy taste in your mouth or did you ever develop indigestion?
With all the pregnancy symptoms I 've been having and the neg. tests at the local free clinic, I finally saw a real Gyno today. He ordered ultrasound and blood tests. I asked him if he thot I was prego? He said anything is possible (Its so great to hear a Dr. say this, instead of just being dismissive).
Ultrasound will be done on monday to check for preg or PID, I go back for results on the 31st. Before then, I want to know if it could be PID? I DO NOT have a discharge with color or odor, I do not have an STD. The doctor could not connect the metallic/soapy taste and indigestion I've developed to anything.
Has anyone with PID ever had metallic taste or real bad indegestion?
My "pregnancy" symptoms came in this order (on & off);
cramps
nausea, headaches, excessive saliva
metallic/sour/soapy taste
indigestion
hunger
achy breasts
vomit |
| Well to the original question - it could be a combo of things and it could very well be one of the ones already mentioned. Every woman experiences something different when they are prego. SOME CRAZY STUFF! But a sinus infection could cause all the other symptoms. (I have very similar symptoms with my chronic sinus crap) Best bet is to wait and see what the doc says before jumping to conclusions or becoming to worried about it. Good Luck! To the question about PID. I am currently being treated for the 2 time for PID. I am part of the 9% that is caused by bacterial infection and not the common STD's. It is a very painful infection that causes radiating pain in the pelvic area, similar to contraction pains. Can cause fever, pain while peeing, having sex, bowel movement, and a list of many other things. 1,000,000 women are diagnoised every year with it and of that about 100,000 become infertile. If left untreated, it can become worse and spread to other organs. Hope this helps! |
How to I properly sterilize USED bottles & breast pump accessories? I want to purchase extra breast shields, collection bottles, etc. for my breast pump. I've found some really cheap ones on eBay that are used. How do I make sure they are completely sterilized? Will washing them with hot soapy water & boiling them for 5-10 minutes be enough? I'm worried about diseases, like hepatitis since these parts would have been in contact with someone else's bodily fluids. Suggestions? |
Your plan sounds fine. Be warned though that some of these products can have tiny nooks and crannies that can be really hard to clean. So be sure you take them apart as much as you can.
You may even wish to soak in hot soapy water first, and then run a new hot soapy water to wash them in before boiling. |
Is the dishwasher enough to clean a breast pump? The thought of boiling parts for 5 minutes after EACH use doesn't seem very practical to me. Is it enough to run them through the dishwasher at the end of the day and clean the with soapy water after each use? |
| Yes, it is. It is just as hot as boiling it and does a better job sterilizing it because it stays hotter longer. |
Does washing your hands with hot soapy water kills sperm? so my bf and i were fooling around and he fingered me and i gave him a hj. after, he cleaned himself up, washed his hands with warm hot water and hand sanitizer, then fingered me again? he washed his hands completely and dried them off. and the period calculator said my period was suppose to come today. im feeling the same symptoms as i usually do when im about to get my period. (sore breast, dishcharge, and diarrhea) but i know this is crazy but i have noticed my stomach getting bigger. it could also be because im eating. i kno this is a silly ? but im freakin out. & i kno i kno, if you dont know about sex, you shouldnt mess around with it, but i didnt have sex, im still a virigin. please let me know if washing your hands with hot soapy water kills sperm? |
| You are probably just bloated because you are about to start your period, the more you freak out the longer it will take. So take a deep breath and keep telling yourself that you are fine, eat some ice cream, watch a movie, get your mind off of thingsand you will get your period and it will all be good. |
Can I reuse the disposable liners that come with my breast pump? I'm assuming the answer is no, but I only use the liners to pump into. I then transfer the milk into freezer bags to store for later. Can I just wash the liners with hot soapy water like I do the pump and reuse them? It seems like if I can just wash the attachments that I could wash the liners as well (I haven't, but I thought I'd ask). |
| I would say No. I pump into a bottle and than transfer the milk to freezer bags, so not sure about bags but I sterilize my bottles and pump pieces every night. |
When you are using a breast pump and you use it a few times a day do you need to sterilise it everytime? I read somewhere that you sterilise it the first time then you can put the equipment in the refrigerator and when you have finished you can wash in soapy water and air dry it. Does anyone know about this and have used a breast pump |
| I used to swill in soapy and pour a kettle of boiling water over/thru it. I only ever properly steralized items on the first usage. |
Working moms... how do you clean your breast pump parts while at work? I am returning to work in a couple of weeks and will be pumping twice while I'm there each day. I will have access to a sink, but I won't have time to wash parts in warm, soapy water like I do at home... But, I'm worried about just rinsing. How can I clean/dry the parts so that they will be ready to use for the 2nd pumping at work? |
| Medela makes pump wipes that you can use after pumping, or you can put the parts into a plastic bag and put in the cooler with your milk. They should be cold when you take them out, but that will allow you to use them again without washing them. |
How often do your boil you pump stuff? I boil my stuff every 2 days ( use each cup for a day then the other, then boil) and this is what it tells you to do in the directions. Now it tells you to boil them for 20 minutes, which I think is ridiculous because I dont even kknowwhat takes 20 minutes to kill, but I do it anyways.
Well i noticed that they started to look "frosted" and I was talking to my cousin who has the exact same pump ( Medela electric double , its like $300 ) and she said that she only boiled her stuff maybe once a week and for 5- 10 minutes, the rest of the time she just washed and let them soak in hot soapy water.
For some reason that seems like you would be getting soap in with your breast milk, but what I am wondering is what did you do?
Thanks in advance :) |
| I boil stuff for first use, but never have since then. Even if you are boiling the stuff it still needs to be cleaned in hot soapy water before you boil. In reality though, nothing you give your baby is really "sterile", especially your breasts! They recommended boiling when water contained bacteria that could hurt your baby but if the water is ok for you to drink, it's fine to wash your baby's stuff in. |
